News from Daytona International Speedway
After a long drive and five days in snowy Daytona Beach, Florida, the UW Hybrid Vehicle Team returned to Madison January 12, 2010, not with a tan, but with knowledge to prepare them for the final judging in May. Located in the infield of the Daytona International Speedway, the team watched demonstrations of how the vehicle's emissions output will be measured and judged in the final competition in May. Additionally, the team learned what will be tested and what constitutes a good score in the automatic vehicle location drive quality event.
The workshop was also a time to present the team’s Hardware in the Loop and Outreach Activities and website. Technical and outreach sessions were held as an opportunity for teams to directly interact with GM and Argonne National Laboratory representatives to answer questions.
The workshop concluded with team photos, a tour of the Daytona International Speedway museum, a barbeque dinner and speech from Faculty Advisor Glenn Bower on lessons learned in year two. The team is now working to create the spring semester’s plan and deadlines in detail so that it can be best prepared for May.
December news — BuckyWagon and EcoCAR Showcase
The UW hybrid vehicle team was on hand at motorsports-themed Middleton restaurant Quaker Steak & Lube Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, to showcase the Bucky Wagon and the EcoCAR.
“This event will be a good opportunity for community members to learn about our vehicle team program and how they can get involved, as well as talk with our students about the importance of hybrid technologies in general,” says Mechanical Engineering Faculty Associate and vehicle team advisor Glenn Bower. “We’re excited to do this at Quaker Steak & Lube because we've had a relationship with the restaurant for years — they currently have three of our past vehicles which would have otherwise been dismantled hanging from their ceiling. We think this is pretty amazing!”
Thank you for your support!
This is a critical time for both the automotive industry and engineering education. To ensure the automotive industry has all the innovative engineering talent it needs, we’ve created an endowment fund to support all of our highly successful hybrid vehicle teams.
The Road Trip Rally, sponsored in partnership by the Wisconsin Alumni Association, Motor City Badgers Chapter, UW-Madison College of Engineering and UW Foundation, was held in Detroit, Michigan, Saturday, October 24, 2009, to launch the endowment.
